The pageant started modestly in 1971 as a community picnic at Sylvan Beach in La Porte. Contestants are judged on their achievements, interpersonal skills and talent.The pageant is open to young women, ages 17 to 26, who have a mother or father of Chinese descent. More than 600 guests attend the pageant, which is presented by the Chinese American Citizens Alliance Houston.
